Story Remains the Same for Bears as They Retire in Florida

The Cal women's soccer team had a chance to rewrite history with its draw in this year's NCAA tournament.

With a repeat of 2006's first and second round games, it was a chance for a redo, a make-up, a do-over, so to speak.

However, history has a tendency to repeat itself. Instead of exacting revenge on Florida State for a second round loss in '06 on Sunday, the top seeded Seminoles (18-4-1) ended the Bears' season again by a 3-0 margin.

"I thought Cal gave us all that we could handle," FSU coach Mark Krikorian said in the post-game press conference. "It was a very challenging first half, especially at the start as they pressured us and created some big chances. If they had a little more luck on their side, I felt that they might have scored one."

Cal (11-9-1) opened play with several strong looks at goal in the first 15 minutes before the Seminoles began to take over at Seminole Soccer Complex in Tallahassee, Fla.

Having watched the Bears' 2-1 overtime victory over Auburn in the first round on Friday night, Krikorian believed that limiting the touches of Cal's leading goal-scorer, Alex Morgan, was key to a second-round victory.

"We really did focus a lot on Alex Morgan; when I saw her Friday night I thought she was excellent, just excellent," Krikorian said, having seen Morgan's goal and game-winning assist on Friday. "She is one of the best attacking players that I have seen in the college game. I thought our kids did a nice job of defending her."

Despite FSU's defensive plan, the junior still managed to get a good look in the ninth minute, forcing Erin McNulty to make the game's first save. The Bears were unable to put one in.

"We felt like we were going to have to capitalize early and then hang on," Cal coach Neil McGuire said. "We created some really good opportunities and unfortunately their keeper made some good saves."

The Seminoles began controlling the ball, which led to their first goal in the 34th and their second in the 41st to put the game nearly out of reach by halftime on two assists from Amanda DaCosta.

"She is clutch," Krikorian said. "I know one thing for sure-I would not want to play against her. Even 25 years ago I would not want to play against her."

The Bears saw their vision of moving on in the tournament become an impossibility when Toni Pressley headed the Seminoles to a three-goal lead in the 74th.

"We had some key misses, and after that I think they saw some of the things that we were trying to do and then they were able to keep the ball," McGuire said. "It made it somewhat difficult for us."

And it was enough to send the Bears home from the Sunshine State with a loss for the third time in four years. Cal will now have to wait another year to try and change history.
