Lexi's Alter Ego is Cal's Best Friend

Sometimes she's just Alexis-quiet, composed and content.

Other times, she's AGL.

That's what senior guard Alexis Gray-Lawson calls her alter ego-the competitive and confident persona that comes out when she takes the court.

It was AGL who contributed 25 points, nine rebounds and four assists when the Cal women's basketball team's knocked off No. 2 Rutgers last season.

The same AGL posted a then-career-high 37 points in the Bears' first home win over No. 9 Stanford since 1993.

And she made another appearance on Saturday in Corvallis, Ore.

AGL knocked down a school record and career-high 47 points. Gray-Lawson's alter-ego was responsible for extending Cal's four-game winning streak with the Bears' 79-75 double-overtime win over Oregon State. It was a performance reminiscent of Stanford and Rutgers, but the context was utterly different.

There was no top-10 opponent. In fact, neither team carried an over-.500 conference record into Gill Coliseum. The real difference is in AGL, herself.

After toppling Rutgers, Gray-Lawson raced back out into the center of the court and couldn't settle the pure excitement that flooded over her. When she posted 37 points over a cross-town rival, Gray-Lawson threw up her arms to rile up a packed stadium. It was uncontrollable, pure emotion.

After Saturday's game, the veteran guard was thrilled to set a new school record, no doubt. But there was something different.

"I am totally exhausted," Gray-Lawson said after the game.

Probably because she played all 40 minutes of regulation and both overtime periods.

"(Gray-Lawson) played every minute," Cal coach Joanne Boyle said. "She put her team on her back and carried it. She won this game for us."

This time, Gray-Lawson was doing it all on her own, and that meant there was less room for emotions to cloud her game.

With 13 seconds left in the first overtime, Gray-Lawson hit two free throws to put the Bears up by three. Nine seconds later she fouled Beavers guard Talisa Rhea on a three-point attempt. Those three free throws sent the game into double overtime, but Cal's only starting veteran wasn't shaken.

"Lexi kept her head in the game," Cal coach Joanne Boyle said.

It wasn't just the exhaustion that kept AGL composed; she kept her emotions in check.

Gray-Lawson was a composed leader and a fiery scorer all at once.

She needed to be both Alexis and AGL. That's what she'll need to be all season to keep her team on this streak.

"The growth for Lexi this season has been the way she has become so consistent," Boyle said. "She practices hard every day so games aren't harder than practices. She has built her confidence in practices. She knows this is her team and she needs to put them on her back."

Unlike last season, Gray-Lawson is playing without the support of Ashley Walker and Devanei Hampton. She can't be AGL in some games and fade into the background in others.

Now flanked by four freshmen starters, it's no secret that Gray-Lawson carries the extra responsibility to remain Cal's consistent shooter.

And it has its upsides.

"They told me I got the school record," Gray-Lawson said. "I am really excited. Ashley (Walker) has broken every record possible here. I finally got one."

It may be one of the few accolades she can boast over Walker, but no one was surprised. It was all just a matter of time.

"As a coach, I look at her and know I am not going to coach kid like this all the time," Boyle said. "It has been unbelievable watching that kid."
