Student Clubbed With Flashlight at Party
A UC Berkeley student was beaten with a flashlight at a fraternity party just before 1 a.m. Saturday morning by a party security guard, police said.
Security guard Massa Wells, 25, of Vallejo, was arrested after he allegedly assaulted the 20-year-old student with his metal flashlight after the student punched him, said Berkeley police Officer Kevin Schofield.
Wells' security company was shutting down a fraternity party on the 2700 block of Bancroft Way about 12:55 a.m., when one student tried to resist being removed by security, Schofield said.
The student punched Wells, who allegedly retaliated by bringing his flashlight down upon the student's head, leaving a small gash on the student's forehead.
Private security guards have the same legal capacity to defend themselves as private citizens, Schofield said, but cannot go any further.
Hitting someone in the head with a metal flashlight is not a reasonable response to being punched, he said.
