City Council Members For a Day

UC Berkeley student Arman Rezaee became Mayor Tom Bates for an hour yesterday night.
Rezaee was presiding over a mock city council meeting in council chambers last night, the final exam for students in "Berkeley City Commissions," a DE-Cal class for students to learn about getting involved in city politics.
Seven of the eight students enrolled in the class plan on becoming involved in commissions, according to Tiffany Batac, co-founder of the class. As commissioners, they are appointed by council members to research important city issues.
Batac started out working for the ASUC in the External Affairs Office, where one of the goals was to increase student representation in city government.
"Students make up 25 percent of the population of Berkeley, yet that number is not represented in City Council or in commissions," Batac said.
"It's different from community service," said Kimberly Crawford, a UC Berkeley senior taking the class. "It shows there are other ways to serve your community that separate the division between it and the campus."
