WHEREAS ASUC boycotted the Coors brewing company and its tasty products because the megacorp had contributed to an anti-affirmative action campaign, at the same time denouncing and calling for the resignation of UC Regent Ward Connerly;
WHEREAS our city has come out in public opposition of China hosting the 2008 Olympics due to its alleged human rights violations against Chinese and Tibetan citizens;
WHEREAS ASUC has passed a formal resolution urging President Bush not to use force in Iraq;
WHEREAS the city council has proclaimed its solidarity with purple Teletubby Tinky-Winky, who faces discrimination in the public eye-"Long live Tinky Winky and long live freedom from self-righteousness," the council stated;
WHEREAS ASUC has made a formal request that the university administration "respect the autonomy of the ASUC by ceasing to tamper with the business;"
WHEREAS Berkeley formally decreed in June that corporations ought not receive constitutional protection because the Bill of Rights is "for live humans only;"
WHEREAS there appears on the ballots of Berkeley voters this Tuesday a measure much like the previous examples, Measure H;
WHEREAS this measure would implement into law public financing of city elections; but only after the whole plan is "deemed economically feasible" by City Council;
WHEREAS this is not in sight and the measure is instead a symbolic motion in favor of public campaign financing rather than a real plan to implement in our local elections;
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that The Daily Californian denounces symbolic measures and will not tolerate the regular waste of money, time and resources by our city and student government on these resolutions rooted outside reality.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that The Daily Californian officially boycotts such symbolic motions in the coming election and in the everyday functioning of our local governments.
