Editorial: Enough Already

It's one thing to play by the rules. It's quite another to beat people to a pulp with them.

To say the situation with Mike Davis and former BEARS-United party candidates has gotten out of hand is an understatement. Currently, the former Judicial Council chair is suing the informal party's head for campaigning on The Facebook (though technically, he wasn't) and posting a sign on the ground in front of Sather Gate.

Should such minor violations be aggrandized by wasting students' fees on such pointless lawsuits? Everyone already knows BU tends to be irresponsible and ignorant when it comes to working within ASUC's bylaws-take their petulant behavior after missing the filing deadline. Attempting to prosecute them further just exacerbates the situation.

Davis is famous for sticking to the letter of the law, but now he has no office, title or political responsibility to enforce them. The last thing he should be doing is burdening campaign season with lawsuits. Every year, petty ASUC drama holds up election results. BEARS-United isn't worth all that trouble, and Davis should realize this.

That's not to say people shouldn't follow rules to begin with. Former BEARS-United candidates have done an excellent job in adamantly stomping through all bylaws that stand in their way. Their actions may not deserve censures, but hopefully students would expect more from candidates for elected office than ignorance of basic campaigning rules. The quasi-party should receive strict warnings-but not time-wasting lawsuits.

And frankly, they should take the time to read the bylaws before they make another move. The "we didn't know" argument only goes so far.

This election is rapidly devolving into little more than party politics-no longer is anyone discussing issues, but who broke what rule. How many people actually know what the former party's platform actually was?

This is a ridiculous waste of resources on student government's part, and an embarrassing example of BU's inefficacy on the other. Both of them need to get their priorities straight and clean up their act.
