Berkeley High School students got a lunchtime special yesterday-a free performance by "American Idol 3" finalist LaToya London.
The Oakland native singled out a Berkeley High senior, pictured here, to serenade with a song from her new release "Love and Life" during her performance for a crowd of cheering students.
London, known for her soulful voice and renditions of classic R&B songs, followed the lunchtime performance by giving out hugs and signing autographs.
She urged students to study hard and recognize the importance of their education.
London's appearance was meant to encourage students to value their academic pursuits, said Berkeley High Student Activities Director Ivery McKnight-Johnson, who organized the event.
"The message that comes from professional entertainers or any celebrities must encourage young people to work hard in school and set goals for successful futures," McKnight-Johnson said in a statement. "I love it when people like LaToya London take the time to bring that message to our students."
