The Berkeley health community kicked off Mental Wellness Week yesterday, offering free depression screenings, consultations with mental health counselors, and brochures detailing how to deal with mental health issues.
University Health Services and Student to Student Peer Counseling, among other groups, are teaming up this week to help students dealing with anxiety, depression and other mental health issues. They particularly hope to reach those who might not realize such services are available.
"With midterm season under way, this time of the semester is when students really need academic support," said Alex De Guia, assistant director of the Student Learning Center
Campus health officials said students under academic and relationship pressures often do not take the time to take care of themselves.
"Students at Berkeley expect a lot," said Susan Rode, a social worker at the Tang Center. "Taking care of themselves is more about academic performance, pushing themselves to the limit; it's not about taking care of themselves in a holistic way: emotionally, mentally, spiritually, socially."
