Pressey, Mazura Named Pac-10 Players of the Week
The impressive play of a couple Cal athletes from two separate squads this past week did not go unnoticed.
Angie Pressey, outside hitter for the No. 17 Bears volleyball team, was named Pac-10 Volleyball Player of the Week.
With Cal trailing in the third game of its match against Baylor on Aug. 26, the junior’s kill tied the score at 21 to put the Bears back in contention and eventually capture the Cal Molten Classic.
“That game really showed a preview of how this season is going to be,” Pressey said. “Everyone played well.”
Recording 20 kills and only five errors in 35 attempts, Pressey was chosen as the co-MVP of the tournament along with teammate freshman Hana Cutura.
“I was actually a little distracted by how well Hana was doing in the first game, and I didn’t even realize my kills or anything,” Pressey said. “I was looking at the stats after and I was like, ‘Oh, OK, I had a pretty good game.’”
The No. 10 Cal women’s soccer team’s two consecutive 1-0 shutouts on the road Aug. 25 and Aug. 27 put the contributions of senior defender Alivia Mazura into the spotlight.
In the title game against Wisconsin, Mazura helped keep Kara Kabellis, the Badgers’ top returning scorer from the 2005 season, in check as the Bears shut down Wisconsin and claimed the Wisconsin Invitational.
