The Cal men’s golf team finds itself in a tie for ninth place after a rocky start Monday at The Prestige in Palm Desert, Calif.
The Bears were inconsistent throughout the day, shooting a dismal 298 in the morning and 299 in the afternoon to finish at 21-over par. To no one’s surprise, No. 12 Stanford and No. 6 UCLA are tied for the lead at six-under par.
The Cardinal and UC Irvine set the pace in the day’s first round, each posting 288 while the Bruins lagged behind at 294. In round two, however, UCLA kicked it into another gear with a blistering round of 12-under par to take a share of the overnight lead.
Sophomore George Gandranata carried Cal, firing 70 and 74 to finish in a tie for 11th at even par. Junior Michael Jensen also looked fairly solid, finishing at five-over par after stumbling to a 77 in the morning.
The rest of the Bears struggled on the long and narrow Greg Norman course. Senior Michael Wilson, after his win at the Allister MacKenzie Invitational last week, self-destructed Monday with back-to-back 78s, a 12-over total.
Cal trails Stanford and the Bruins by a distant 27 strokes, but several of the nation’s top teams including Colorado, Kansas and No. 6 USC, are still within reach. The Trojans, like the Bears, were less than stellar in the morning and then continued their downward slide in the afternoon to finish at 18-over par.
