This year’s spring admits will be the first to experience a spring Welcome Week after the event was approved at Wednesday’s ASUC Senate meeting.

The week, which is planned for Jan. 17-19, will be the first spring semester Welcome Week and will be chaired by Student Action senators Curtis Lee and Ilana Nankin.

Traditionally, Welcome Week takes place in the fall for new students and is put together and funded by New Student Services.

Unlike the week in August, the new spring Welcome Week will only last three days but is set to include a club fair, a musical concert and a barbecue put on by the Interfraternity Council and the Panhellenic Council, among other events.

“There is no implemented spring Welcome Week,” Lee said. “(Spring Welcome Week) will help the admits transition into Cal.”

Some senators said a spring Welcome Week must be comparable to the one in the fall in order for it to be effective.

“It’s essential that spring admits get a great welcome like the fall admits,” Nankin said at the senate meeting.

Like fall Welcome Week, the spring Welcome Week will have a club fair which will be expanded for the day to act as a “mini-Calapalooza,” Nankin said.

In order to fund the new Welcome Week, senators voted to release $3,000, which some said will help new students get involved in activities on campus before classes begin.

“(Spring admits) can learn about what’s offered at Cal,” Nankin said. “(Spring Welcome Week) will provide (admits) with the opportunity to sign up for groups and get involved right away.”

While the fall Welcome Week is funded by New Student Services, the funding for the spring Welcome Week will come from the ASUC’s Carry-Forward Reserve Fund, which is made up of any funds student organizations do not use and a percentage of profits from ASUC businesses, Ang said.

“(Spring Welcome Week) was never brought to the New Student Services’ attention, but they’re very interested to see how it goes,” Ang said.

Some senators said they hope that the event will set a precedent for future spring welcome weeks and continue as an annual event.

“I think if it is successful, people next year will continue (Welcome Week) and institutionalize it into the system,” Nankin said.
