Five weeks after CalSERVE announced its ASUC executive candidates, Student Action and other parties’ slates for this spring’s elections were confirmed at Tuesday’s candidate meeting, during which the ballot was finalized.
The Student Action slate includes Student Action Senator Ilana Nankin as the presidential candidate, Senator Eunice Moon as the executive vice presidential candidate, Senator Curtis Lee as the academic affairs vice presidential candidate and APPLE Engineering Senator Dwight Asuncion as the external affairs vice presidential candidate.
Asuncion said the party’s assembled slate is composed of experienced candidates for the positions.
“We’re all very qualified,” Asuncion said. “As senators, we have experience in the ASUC. We’ve been in offices, we know how that works. We lead people.”
Berkeley College Republicans Senator Victoria Mitchell said she thinks Student Action’s slate will do well in the coming elections.
“The Student Action slate is always very successful,” Mitchell said. “The success of the slate is testimony to the quality of leaders they choose.”
The SQUELCH! party’s executive slate is made up of party member Joseph Rothberg as the presidential candidate, Senator David Wasserman as the executive vice presidential candidate, co-signatory John O’Connor as the academic affairs vice presidential candidate and party member John Waste as the external affairs vice presidential candidate.
Waste also works as a columnist for The Daily Californian.
SQUELCH! party co-signatory Ben Narodick said the four main goals of the slate in the coming year would be to reduce student government spending, promote funding for student organizations, help fund student publications and protect student rights.
As of 6:00 p.m. yesterday, 24 candidates had filed their forms to run for an executive office, with 23 candidates filing under a party name, according to the preliminary list of candidates.
Joining Nankin, Rothberg, and CalSERVE Senator Van Nguyen in the
presidential race is Defend Affirmative Action Party Senator Dimitri Garcia, independent candidate Travis Garcia, BEARS-United candidate Justin Azadivar and University Progress candidate Eric Adrian Marshall.
Azadivar is also running for all of the other executive offices.
The candidate filing deadline, which was originally scheduled to end last Friday at 5 p.m., ends today at 9 a.m.
