A man was found dead in the San Francisco Bay near the Berkeley Marina yesterday, police said.
The man, who has not yet been identified, was found approximately 250 yards off-shore, said Berkeley police Lt. Wesley Hester.
The Berkeley police Homicide Unit is now handling the case, according to Hester.
“We’re tying to figure out if the cause of death was by criminal means or if it was accidental, it could have been a variety of different things,” Hester said.
Alameda County Coroner’s Office officials said the body has not yet been identified and no cause of death has yet been determined.
Berkeley police received a call at 9:24 a.m. yesterday notifying them that a body had been found in the water, Hester said.
The body was originally reported to the U.S. Coast Guard, who recovered it from the water, Hester said.
Berkeley police said they are continuing to investigate the incident.
“A week prior we had a report of a person seen jumping into the water off the Berkeley Pier,” Hester said. “We went down and investigated and never found the person, we’re not sure if that incident coincides with the body washing up, but it is a possibility.”
