A man was struck by a vehicle as he crossed Telegraph Avenue this afternoon, leaving him in critical condition and resulting in the closure of a segment of Telegraph for several hours to vehicle traffic.

The man, who appeared to be in his 30s and has not yet been identified by police, was crossing the intersection of Telegraph and Blake Street when he was struck by a car, said Berkeley police Lt. Wesley Hester.

Hester said police were notified at approximately 12:14 p.m. of the collision.

The man was walking across Telegraph when he was hit by an older-model, white Honda Accord, Hester said.

“Upon being struck he was thrown a good distance and landed and suffered from what seems like a severe head injury,” Hester said.

Paramedics arrived quickly and transported the man to the trauma center of Highland General Hospital in Oakland, where he is in critical condition and is still unconscious, Hester said.

Hester said it appeared the driver was headed northbound on Telegraph at the time of the collision. He said more information will become available after the investigation on scene is complete.

A portion of Telegraph between Dwight Way and Parker Street remained closed to vehicle traffic for more than three hours as police investigated the incident. The intersection has since been reopened.

“With a very serious and/or fatal collision, very intense measurements and calculations are taken,” Hester said.

Hester said the signal equipment at the intersection appeared to be functioning normally and the road was well marked and had been recently painted.

The driver of the car has been detained by police and is undergoing interviews, Hester said.

“We have an officer conducting interviews with that person and evaluating the person's behavior,” Hester said. “We’re not clear if the person will be charged or not.”
