Mother Accused of Murder Of Young Son Arraigned
A Berkeley mother charged with murdering her nine-year-old son was arraigned Monday in a local hospital where she remains under medical care, authorities said.
Misti Hassan, 31, is being held without bail after being charged Friday with one count of murder by the Alameda County District Attorney, said Berkeley police Sgt. Mary Kusmiss. Police said an investigation found incriminating writings and statements to witnesses indicating she had drugged and killed her son, Amir Hassan.
Hassan called a friend in San Jose Wednesday morning and said she had hurt herself and killed her son with Klonopin, an anti-anxiety prescription drug that was found in a search of the apartment, police said.
When officers entered her Shattuck Avenue apartment shortly after, they found the child’s body, whom they estimate had been dead up to 36 hours.
They also found Misti Hassan with self-inflicted cuts on her arms and neck, authorities said. She was taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland. She is expected to recover.
Hassan was handed over from Berkeley police Monday into the custody of county sheriff’s deputies, Kusmiss said. She will be taken to Santa Rita Jail Facility when she is medically cleared.
