Sixth Seat Opens on ASUC Judicial Council After Justice’s Resignation

Correction appended

One of the four justices on the ASUC Judicial Council resigned yesterday at the end of her two-year term, leaving only 3 members on the 9-person council.

Aurora Masum-Javed was elected to the council in October 2005 and said in an e-mail that she is resigning now because she does not remember exactly when her term ends this month. She said her resignation is intended as a reminder of the expiration.

Masum-Javed also said in her resignation letter that she would like to step down in order to allow a replacement to begin training as soon as possible.

Despite the six open spots on the council, Masum-Javed said she thinks she will be easily replaced.

“I think the opening will be easily filled,” she said. “There are many qualified candidates on this campus.”

There are currently three nominees to the council under consideration by the ASUC Senate’s Committee on Constitutional and Procedural Review, said Student Action Senator Lisa Patel, who chairs the committee.

Nominations to the Judicial Council could only be made by ASUC President Van Nguyen during the first three senate meetings of the year. They can now also be made by senators.

Three of the spots on the council are filled by nominations from Graduate Assembly President Joshua Daniels. All three of those spots are currently open.

Nguyen made three new nominations for one spot at the senate meeting last night. He said that, despite the current lack of justices, he hopes to appoint only candidates who are qualified.

Elections Council Chair Kate Feng said she hopes the council will soon have more justices.

“It is in everyone’s best interest so they will be trained and ready for elections (this spring),” she said.

Correction: Thursday’s news brief “Sixth Seat Opens on ASUC Judicial Council After Justice’s Resignation,” incorrectly stated that all three slots for graduate students on the ASUC Judicial Council are open. In fact, one of those spots is currently filled by graduate student Sikina Jinnah.

The Daily Californian regrets the error.
