Ronald Stovitz, past president of the UC Riverside Alumni Association and a retired presiding judge of the State Bar Court, was chosen earlier this month to serve as an alumni representative to the UC Board of Regents.

Stovitz, who was selected by the board of directors for the Riverside alumni association on Nov. 15, said he is excited to have been chosen.

“I was a bit surprised because I knew how many competitors there were for the position,” he said. “I’m very honored and quite humbled given how competitive it was.”

The systemwide alumni regent positions are filled through a rotational system between the nine campuses’ alumni associations, according to Kyle Hoffman, assistant vice chancellor of alumni and constituent relations at UC Riverside.

The UC Board of Regents includes the president and vice president of the Alumni Associations of the University of California’s as voting members, and its secretary and treasurer as regent designates, UC spokesperson Trey Davis said in an e-mail.

Stovitz, who completed his undergraduate degree at UC Riverside in 1964, served as president of the UC Riverside Alumni Association from 2004-06 and has been a trustee for the UC Riverside Foundation since 1998.

Stovitz will begin his term as alumni regent-designate July 1 and will take over as an alumni regent after one year.

Stovitz said one of his plans is to work on affordability and diversity issues within the UC system.

“I certainly am concerned about access to the university for all eligible students at an affordable tuition,” he said. “(I want) to ensure UC and all of its campuses match the diversity of California in the 21st century.”

Hoffman said Stovitz was picked for his extensive involvement in the university.

“I’ve rarely seen somebody as committed to their alma mater as Ron Stovitz,” he said. “His passion, commitment and clear thinking all stood out as qualities that we felt were important.”

Stovitz said he is looking forward to working with both the university and the state through his new position.

“I’m just so honored and delighted to undertake this service, not only for the university but for the people of California,” he said.
