Relations between the Greek system and UC Berkeley have, in recent years, been strained, at best.

But in its method of lifting a system-wide alcohol moratorium on Greek houses, the UC Berkeley Office of Student Life has taken an active step in repairing its relationship with fraternities and sororities.

The Interfraternity Council and Office of Student Life agreed to a process whereby the alcohol moratorium will be lifted on a chapter-by-chapter basis.

Each Greek house will be evaluated for "level of risk" to determine which houses can hold social events in which alcohol is present.

Originally, several fraternities were upset with the alcohol moratorium, as such a sweeping regulation was applied to all fraternities. However, many Greek houses were already in compliance with the university's alcohol rules.

The Office of Student Life's chapter-by-chapter method of lifting the alcohol moratorium shows it is departing from imposing sweeping regulations. In making effective regulations, such an approach in which each Greek house is analyzed is crucial.

Hopefully, the Office of Student Life and Greek houses will work together in the future as they have done these past weeks in lifting the alcohol moratorium.
