Beginning on the afternoon of Sept 19, the Woodward Reservoir in Oakdale transformed into a music and arts haven for a long weekend. The Symbiosis Gathering is an intimate festival on a lake, packed with music, art, dancing, swimming, yoga and much more.

The tone of the event was set by the International Day of Peace, the autumnal equinox and the full moon. The beautiful ceremony included a moment of silence for peace, long days and longer nights, as well as a chance to see masses of people howling at the moon on a two-story wolf art installation

Never have I been so fully immersed in a modern counterculture, surrounded by art of all forms, and music that never stopped. Here is a glimpse of the magic that unfolded.

Amid the downpour at Eugene, Ore., the Saturday night game between the Cal football team and Oregon carried on. However, the competition for who will come out as the victor was short-lived, as the No. 2 Ducks blasted their way to a 28-0 lead in the first quarter.

This past Friday, I attended Oakland’s arts street fair, First Friday. At the beginning of each month, Telegraph Avenue (from West Grand to 27th Street) is filled with art, music, food, open galleries, performers and vendors. Someone suggested that I attend, so with an open mind and my camera in hand, I hit the streets.

It was just a simple bart ride away to be completely immersed in so many forms of art and culture, with inspiration everywhere I looked. The events that I experienced ranged from live Graffiti artists, a virtual interactive maze, an outdoor comedy club, to a fashion show for tuxedo clad 7-year-olds. But what I found most fascinating was the wide array of attendees, from so many different facets of life, who were all there to see and be a part of art.

The close proximity of a free event filled with so much art and culture should not be passed up. Although it took me a year to find First Friday, it will definitely be on my calendar for the months to come.
