City Council passes agricultural ordinance to encourage urban farming

The ordinance amended zoning laws that previously required private property owners to obtain a permit before establishing community gardens on their land. Under the new ordinance, these property owners can grow and sell their own food without a permit but will still have to comply with food safety laws, including the California Health and Safety Code, as first reported by Berkeleyside.

FEMA grants BART $6.8M to boost security

BART applied for the FEMA grant in June and competed with other transit systems nationwide. It was one of 19 different systems to receive grants, and BART received one of the most substantial grants, according to BART media relations manager James Allison.

According to Niche, Berkeley scored an A-plus in categories ranging from quality of public schools to nightlife, weather, commute and living situation for families. It also came in first as the “healthiest” city in the United States. But the city scores lower in other criteria, such as crime and safety, housing and cost of living.
