The cost of a smile: Emotional labor in the workplace

The term “emotional labor” comes from sociologist Arlie Hochschild, who coined it in her 1983 book “The Managed Heart: Commercialization of Human Feeling.” Hochschild received her doctorate in sociology from UC Berkeley and was a professor of sociology on campus until her retirement.
