Controversial state housing bill SB 827 dies in committee hearing

Berkeley City Council members were among many California city representatives who opposed SB 827. Prior to the committee decision, Berkeley City Council had resolved to formally oppose the bill April 24 — a resolution that was put forth by Mayor Jesse Arreguín and councilmembers Sophie Hahn, Kate Harrison and Linda Maio.

‘Tangible and physical reminder’ of Berkeley’s pre-World War II Japanese American community gets landmark status

The building, located at 2526-32 Shattuck Ave., housed a commercial laundry for nearly three decades. It was operated by Japanese American families until 1942 when the families were sent to internment camps, forcing Berkeley’s Japanese-Americans to “settle their affairs, dispose of their belongings, pack, and register for removal,” according to Berkeley Architectural Heritage Association, or BAHA, President Steven Finacom in an email.
