The beauty of sports lies not in them games themselves, but in the ability to bring thousands of people, regardless of race, creed or color, together, if for but a few mere hours in the grand scheme of this thing we call life. Sports allows its audience to escape a reality which has normalized the horrific, the grotesque, the terrifying, and enter a new one, one which solely revolves around two clans of warriors fighting for victory.

Bears break out pads, run live action in 6th practice

“I think the whole defense didn’t practice at all last year,” said an onlooker in the stands at Cal football’s sixth practice. Many may share his sentiments, but Cal’s defense, now led by Tim DeRuyter, showed some promise on Saturday. Getting their first taste under the lights this fall camp, the Bears were hyped and energized to finally get their pads on and get down to business.

Bring ’em out; Bears begin fall camp

At the beginning of practice, speakers blared and Gucci Mane’s “Met Gala” set the the tone for camp, but a short while later, the music was gone in what seemed like an even bigger change in tone. While it was only the first day of camp, it was clear that the Bears were hard at work, and with good reason. Many predict that Cal will have a mediocre season and camp is going to be crucial for the Bears if they want to make waves in an extremely competitive Pac-12 conference.

Voting on the tastiest donut, trying to figure out if a certain head also stars in “Game of Thrones” and getting messy with some slime stole the show in star-studded Hollywood. During the 2017 Pac-12 Media Day, senior Tre Watson and redshirt senior James Looney of Cal football, along with head coach Justin Wilcox, took a break from the practice field for some fun and games.

By the end of his freshman season, Ivan Rabb had put himself in the best position possible to not only get drafted, but to be selected in the lottery along with teammate and eventual No. 3 overall pick Jaylen Brown. A year and some change removed from his decision, Rabb’s stock has universally fallen in Mock Drafts as teams prepare for what is expected to be a star-studded class of 2017 featuring Markelle Fultz, Lonzo Ball and Josh Jackson, among others.
