On the fourth day of practice, quarterback Austin Hinder seemed limited in number of reps, while Jared Goff and Zach Kline got the majority.

And in the reps he did get, he didn’t look that impressive. Hinder overthrew a couple of passes and was sacked at least twice.

Coach Sonny Dykes, however, did not confirm that the race may now be down to just Goff and Kline.

“Yeah, it was just kind of what we did today,” Dykes said about Hinder’s limited reps. “We’ll evaluate it tomorrow and come out with a plan tomorrow.”

Kline and Goff, meanwhile made the most of their fourth day. Kline had a pass that should have been intercepted by Damariay Drew, but overall, he did not look off of his game. He also had a scramble in 11-on-11s that went for nearly 20 yards.

And Goff got the most action. He had a few beautiful deep passes that showed off his touch and sense of timing. Goff also rolled out on a few plays and was able to complete passes while throwing on the run.

“They’re both anticipating throws better,” Dykes said. “The more reps they get, the more they see things clearly.”

Right now, it looks like Goff and Kline are in a tight, two-horse race. But Hinder is still getting reps and is not out for the count just yet.

Today was also the first day that the players competed in “shells,” or shoulder pads and helmets while still wearing shorts. In previous practices, the players had only worn helmets, and the increased padding immediately led to an increased physicality in the practice. Though tackling was still not allowed, there were a few big hits. One in particular, between Kameron Jackson and Jonah Hodges, stood out.

In a typical 11-on-11 drill, Hodges caught a short pass and immediately collided with Jackson. The hit featured an audible boom that was heard throughout the stadium. Fans gasped, but neither was injured on the play.

Dykes plans on using those kind of big hits as an opportunity to teach his players how to hit properly. New NCAA rules have placed greater restrictions on how a defensive player can hit an opponent.

“We’ll look at it and see, but based on what I saw, it could have been targeting,” Dykes said. “We’ll pull it off tape, show it to our players and use it to teach.”

Speaking of Kameron Jackson, the junior cornerback has received high praise from his colleagues. Wide receivers Bryce Treggs and Jack Austin both called him the best cornerback they have had to go against.

“He isn’t a big guy, but he’s very quick, he has great hands, he gets up in your face when he needs to and, even when he’s off the ball, he’s pretty hard to fight with,” Austin said. “But I feel confident going against him.”

With the physicality heightened, defensive players were able to finally show their teeth. Things will only get more aggressive when fully padded practices begin on Sunday.

That’s the number of positions Cal coach Sonny Dykes said are unsettled after the third day of practice. The entire roster is up in the air.

And nowhere is the position more up in the air than quarterback.

Austin Hinder began the day and immediately threw an interception to Jalen Jefferson. Ouch.

“Very first play — I loved it,” Jefferson said of his interception. “I almost had three today.”

Hinder probably didn’t love it quite as much.

The interception didn’t rattle Hinder, as he came back to make some tough throws later in the practice. Unfortunately, he threw another pick later in the day. Though his performance wasn’t bad by any stretch outside of those two interceptions, they put a damper on his day and definitely did not help him in the race.

Zach Kline also had two picks throughout the day, breaking his goal of having no turnovers throughout camp on just the third day. But Kline was able to make some other big throws, including several that were threaded between tight defensive coverage.

“Kline is showing off his arm strength, and he’s also showing touch on his pass,” said wide receiver Bryce Treggs. “That’s something I feel he didn’t have in the spring.”

Jared Goff, meanwhile, easily had his best day of camp and hit Chris Harper and Bryce Treggs on some downfield throws. The true freshman also showed off his running ability when he scrambled for about a 10-yard gain during 11-on-11s.

“Today was probably Goff’s best day,” Dykes said. “He looked more comfortable today than he did the other two days.”

Dykes also had words of praise for Hinder and Kline too, so don’t think that the race is any closer to its conclusion because of Goff’s performance.

Meanwhile, on defensive, it was Jalen Jefferson’s turn to shine. He had the aforementioned pick from Hinder and generally seemed to be in the right place at the right time.

“He is just playing so fast right now,” Dykes said about Jefferson, whom he named as one of the players that stood out to him.

On the offensive side of the ball, it was Bryce Treggs’ show. The sophomore receiver caught several deep balls and was constantly breaking away from defensive backs.

“I’m always looking for ways to improve,” Treggs said. “I do want to be a game changer.”

Chris Harper, the other star receiver on the squad, also made some big plays. He had a one-handed diving catch in the corner of the end zone that drew cheers from the crowd of about 50 people at the practice.

Meanwhile, two skirmishes that broke out between the offense and the defense put a damper on the practice. One happened during offensive and defensive line drills, and the other occurred during 11-on-11s. This is the third in three days — including one that broke out on Monday.

It’s unclear who started both, but Dykes is not worried about them yet, because the skirmishes — which haven’t been serious enough to call full-blown fights — prove that the players care.

“I’ve been places where I was begging them to fight,” he said. “No one was competitive enough to fight.”

The first thing that stood out was, surprisingly, Cal’s new helmets. Though the familiar Cal script does not yet adorn them, the matte blue looks good. If nothing else, the team will look stylish when the football season kicks off in less than a month.

The next thing that stood out was Brendan Bigelow. The junior running back had a brace on his right knee, but he still had his flashes of speed. There is no doubt now that his recovery is on schedule — he looked like he could be playing if the season started today. That said, he seemed to be running at about 90 percent of his usual speed. That’s still fast, but once he gets that brace off, the familiar burst will return.

And of course, after Bigelow, all eyes were on the quarterbacks.

Jared Goff got the most reps in 11-on-11 drills. He missed a few passes early but gained consistency down the stretch as the sun began to go down. The usual touch that he has on his passes began to show once some of the rust wore off.

“We were all a little bit rusty out there,” he admitted.

In addition, Goff looked like he had gained some weight. The main knock on him in spring practices was his weight, but he said after the practice that he put on 15 pounds in the summer. It showed, as he didn’t look as frail as he did in the spring.

Zach Kline also looked good when he got reps. His passes had zip — sometimes they were thrown so hard that receivers couldn’t hold on to them. And in drills where all five QBs on the roster were throwing at once, Kline’s arm strength was demonstrated, and it was clear that his balls could hit their target much quicker than anyone else’s.

But Kline had his inconsistencies. A few passes were thrown behind receivers, and he took quite a few sacks.

“I’m going for no turnovers this camp — that’s my goal,” Kline said. “And keep the sacks to a minimum.”

But it was Austin Hinder who stole the show. While he showed off his running ability during spring practice, he showed off his passing today. He connected on a few deep throws that had the crowd cheering.

“This fall camp, I’m trying to stay in the pocket and show that passing is what I’m all about and that, if I have to, I’ll take off.” Hinder said after the practice.

But those three were not the only three throwing the football. Wide receiver Kyle Boehm, who played quarterback in high school, was thrown into wildcat formations early and often. He usually took off running but also showed that he could throw when he connected on some short passes.

Despite the exceptional performance from Hinder, the QB race is still as muddled as ever. Goff and Kline both looked good, despite their inconsistencies. As has been the case for months, we simply will not know more until the season is closer.

Right now, there are three candidates vying for the spot — Austin Hinder, Jared Goff, and Zach Kline. Each has a very different play style and would take the offense in a different direction from his competitors. When Fall camp opens on Aug. 5, look for one of these three to take the starting role.

Austin Hinder

Redshirt junior

Height: 6 feet, 4 inches

Weight: 200 pounds

Austin Hinder’s strengths lie in his legs and his leadership.

He’s the most agile quarterback of the bunch and the most likely to move the chains with a well-timed scramble. In the spring game in March, he ran for 37 yards on just four carries. He’s listed as a pro-style QB, but with the way he moves on his feet, he could easily be seen as a dual-threat one.

It would make sense for Sonny Dykes and Tony Franklin to make him the starter in the fall, as they have both stated that they want a quarterback who can move in the pocket and make throws on the run the way Hinder can.

It would also make sense from a leadership perspective — Hinder is the only upperclassman in the mix for the starting job. Though he doesn’t have a start under his belt, he still has the most experience out of the three.

While his throwing ability doesn’t look to be as polished as that of Kline or Goff, his other abilities may push him over the top come August.

Jared Goff

True freshman

Height: 6 feet, 4 inches

Weight: 205 pounds

Jared Goff is the youngest of the three, but don’t count him out.

Goff is a true pocket passer, and during spring training his passes looked crisp and on target. While accuracy and timing are his main strengths, alo working toward Goff’s advantage is a familiarity with Dykes’ system, as he ran a similar spread-style offense in high school.

The concern with him is that as a true freshman, he may need more time to develop to compete at the college level. He may also need to put on more weight — though he is listed at 205 pounds now, he was listed at 185 pounds just a few months ago and looks much smaller in pads — making injuries a concern.

An investment in Goff would be a major investment in the future for Dykes and company. Due to his youth, it may make more sense to redshirt him and bring him out in a few years, when he has developed his game more. But if he proves to have the most talent, there is no reason to not start him now.

Zach Kline

Redshirt junior

Height: 6 feet, 2 inches

Weight: 200 pounds

Zach Kline’s abilities begin and end with his arm. He’s a gunslinger in every sense of the word — able to make the big throws but not without the occasional struggles in his accuracy.

He may be the best passer of the three vying for the starting position. Kline threw for 124 yards, the most of the three in Cal football’s spring game in March.

But there are two major concerns with Kline. The first is consistency, which he has struggled with during practices and in camps. He’ll make an amazing play just to come back with an errant pass the next. But if he can solve that issue, he’ll be lethal.

His other major concern is the offensive system he is being put into. Kline was recruited by Tedford, who ran a pro-style system similar to what Kline ran in high school. Under Dykes’ spread style, things will be very different, and Kline will be forced to adjust.

But if he can adjust to the fast new system and continue to make those great throws with better consistency, he may just be the most talented of the bunch.

Though Cal football coach Sonny Dykes and the new staff released their first depth chart of the year on Thursday, Cal fans shouldn’t get too excited.

The roster did not narrow down the three-way quarterback race between Jared Goff, Zach Kline and Austin Hinder. At this point, it looks like the battle for the position will go down to the wire.

Considering spring practice wasn’t enough for the staff to decide on even the top two candidates in the race, it’s conceivable that they might not pick a starter until shortly before the season starts.

That said, the quarterbacks were not listed alphabetically. Goff was listed before Kline, who in turn was listed before Hinder.

Does this mean Goff is in the lead for the position?

No doubt this will cause endless speculation for fans that are clamoring for an answer, but right now, nothing seems to be certain. Until there are fewer than three names on that list, any of the three could win the starting job.

Meanwhile, there were a few interesting changes.

The most striking was that Richard Rodgers did not make the list of starting receivers. Instead, senior Jackson Bouza claimed one of the inside receiver spots, despite having only played in five games in his career for Cal.

Fans shouldn’t read too much into this change. Rodgers’ place on the depth chart is probably due to the injuries he suffered in spring practice and not due to a decision by the coaches. And in Dykes’ new offense, every receiver is going to see playing time regardless of his position on the depth chart.

The only other interesting note is the relative youth across the roster; only four seniors appear on the offense and defense combined.

This is truly a new team. New players, new coaches, new system, new uniforms — a completely new identity moving forward from last year.

The depth chart can’t tell fans much, but it confirms the new direction that Cal is headed in. Other than that, it’s not useful to read into it too much — the important depth chart is the one released after fall practices, not spring.

Attached below is Cal football’s official depth chart:

Kline looked like the front-runner and Goff was a longshot. Bridgford, as the only returning quarterback with any experience playing quarterback at Cal, was assumed to hang around at least until the fall competition.

When new head coach Sonny Dykes and Tony Franklin began to divvy up the reps in practice, Bridgford was clearly behind Kline, Goff, and Hinder. Bridgford left the team this week to talk to his parents about possibly transferring.

Bridgford threw for 277 yards in 2012, with one TD and three interceptions. He replaced Zach Maynard and almost led a last-second comeback against Washington after Maynard went down with a knee injury.

Shaq Thompson, Washington nickelback
The No. 1 safety in the country, Shaq Thompson was all set to follow in his older brother Syd’Quan’s footsteps and anchor the Cal secondary for four years. That all changed when Tosh Lupoi bolted from Berkeley to Seattle, the morning after he was at Thompson’s house. Thompson re-opened his recruiting the next day and, two weeks later, committed to Washington. He has started every game this season for a much-improved Husky defense, proving his worth with 45 tackles to go along with a sack and an interception.

Arik Armstead, Oregon defensive end
Arik Armstead was supposed to be to Cal’s defensive line what Shaq Thompson would be to the secondary. Instead, he has helped shore up the defensive line for Oregon, registering 19 tackles in eight games. The 6-foot-8 specimen was sold on Chip Kelly following Lupoi’s untimely exit from the Cal program.

Ellis McCarthy, UCLA defensive tackle
Ellis McCarthy was the first defect following Lupoi’s departure from Cal. The five-star recruit decommitted the day Lupoi split for Washington. Now at UCLA, McCarthy has only logged eight tackles and a single sack in six games, but at 6-foot-5, 330 pounds, the defensive tackle has the potential to be a future star.

Aziz Shittu, Stanford defensive end
Cardinal defensive end Aziz Shittu originally committed to Stanford in May 2011 but backed out shortly after. Cal was the frontrunner for the five-star recruit from Atwater, Calif., right until Lupoi left. That led Shittu back to the Farm. He surely would have been on the field for the Bears given their banged-up defensive line. Instead, Shittu has yet to play for Stanford, looking as if he will redshirt.

Jordan Payton, UCLA wide receiver
First, Jordan Payton was going to be a Trojan. Then, he committed to Cal. When Lupoi and Eric Kiesau left for Washington, Payton decided to follow them. Now he is on UCLA. Yet, the No. 15 wide receiver prospect in the country has not lived up to his billing thus far. Despite playing in seven, Payton has only caught seven passes for 72 yards and has yet to reach the end zone.

Chris Harper, Cal wide receiver
Who needs Jordan Payton? Chris Harper, a three-star recruit from Encino, Calif., originally signed with Southern Methodist because his dream school, Cal, already had offers out to more than enough receivers. When two of those receivers decommitted, Cal offered Harper a scholarship, and he immediately accepted. All Harper has done as a Bear is catch 29 passes for 380 yards, both second on the team. Harper and fellow freshman Bryce Treggs look to be the foundation of a potent receiving corps for years to come. And with an injured Keenan Allen out Friday and maybe for the season, the Bryce-Harper era starts now.

Zach Kline, Cal quarterback
Zach Kline stayed true to his word. The No. 2 quarterback prospect did not renege on his promise to play for the Bears. The California Football Player of the Year at San Ramon Valley High School, Kline enrolled at Cal early and is redshirting this season. The expected starter next season and the three after that, Kline is considered the future of the program.

But it isn’t.

This was supposed to be my “Replace Zach Maynard with Zach Kline” column after Maynard threw incomplete passes on 19-of-28 attempts, most of which were not close.

But it’s not.

This was supposed to be my “Start Brendan Bigelow at tailback” column after Bigelow, who averages 20.6 yards a carry, did not touch the ball once on Saturday.

But it won’t be.

The effort was there; the passion was there. At this point, there’s not much more you can ask of this team.

“What do you want me to reassess and hope for?” asked a choked-up Tedford after the game. “We’re gonna work our tails off … We’re not gonna quit. We ain’t quitting.”

Isi Sofele came out of the locker room sniffling. Avery Sebastian seemed disinterested in talking about his impressive play in his first career start. Keenan Allen came out to answer questions despite vomiting during the game.

“I don’t think it’s the flu,” he said, as if that made everything better.

But is losing contagious? It’s three straight games now. Cal has not led in a game since early in the fourth quarter three Saturdays ago.

It would be easy to blame this all on someone. Tedford would make the obvious scapegoat.

Tedford made some questionable decisions Saturday, but it’s not necessarily his fault that passes are incomplete. Maynard made some horrendous throws, but it’s not necessarily his fault he has only a few seconds to get rid of the ball before he’s sacked, and it’s not always his fault when receivers drop balls. It’s not the offensive line’s fault the squad’s best starting field position was the 27-yard line. The list could keep going on.

Even with no rushes from Bigelow, Cal’s running game might have been the highlight of Saturday. Seniors Sofele and C.J. Anderson combined for 183 yards on 23 carries.

There were countless lowlights — the penalties, the turnover, the unsuccessful third downs. Whatever the cause, Cal is 1-4, and the Bears will have to win five of their next seven — including a visit from No. 2 Oregon — just to become bowl eligible.

Starting Kline and Bigelow and firing Tedford and the coordinators sets a bad example. It wouldn’t be worth an 8-4 season next year. It would also be quitting. Save the “Fire Tedford” talk for the offseason. There are still seven weeks. There’s still fight in this Cal club, and maybe some wins too.

“Of course we didn’t envision being here, but now is when our true character comes out,” Tedford said Sunday.

It’s just that fans — students, alumni, really any spectator — we’re worn out, too. Not to the extent of the players and coaches, but Saturdays also take a mental, emotional and physical toll on us. It hurts.

At some point, the numbness will subside. Hopefully it already has. We’ll go back to studying for our unnecessarily early midterms, we’ll return to our normal everyday lives. Next Saturday we’ll come together again to commiserate — or celebrate, who knows? — when Cal hosts UCLA.

I have no moral to this story. Maybe Cal goes on a winning streak, makes a bowl game, and all is forgotten. Maybe Cal keeps losing, and we all go back to the rest of our lives.

Or maybe, like Allen, we’ll get over that sick feeling in our stomachs and return to the field still hungry, still fired up and not ready to give up on the Bears just yet.

Some tidbits from the conference:

Zach Maynard and Allen Bridgford are slated as the starting and backup quarterbacks, respectively. No surprise there. Freshman Zach Kline is going to compete for the third quarterback spot in the depth chart, vacated by senior Brock Mansion.

Even less surprising: running back Isi Sofele and wide receiver Keenan Allen are expected to receive limited action through spring practice. Sofele rushed for 1,322 yards and 10 touchdowns, and Allen caught 98 passes for 1,343 yards. There is little to nothing for the two to prove to their coaches this spring.

When asked if this is likely Allen’s last spring at Cal before he takes off to the NFL, Tedford said he didn’t know. Tedford said he’ll likely talk to Allen this summer about the player’s future plans.

Center Dominic Galas is out for spring practice. Incoming freshman Matt Cochran will get some reps at center this spring.

With punter Bryan Anger gone, kickers Vince D’Amato and incoming freshman Ben Calder will get some punting reps. A dark horse: tight end Richard Rodgers, who has some punting experience from high school, will get some reps as well.

Vince D’Amato is slated to be the starting kicker for the Bears next season. Tedford said D’Amato was “on Giorgio Tavecchio’s heels” for the entirety of last season.

When Cal takes the field at the renovated Memorial Stadium for the first time on Sep. 1, the stadium will be “game-ready” but not fully renovated. Tedford did not know which aspect of Memorial still required construction.

Cal’s spring game is scheduled for April 21, likely at Witter Field. Tedford has not decided whether it will be an actual game or a game-situation scrimmage (the latter would be the result of a shortage of available players at certain positions).

Shaq Thompson
Sacramento, Calif. (Grant)

The journey of Shaq Thompson’s recruitment was a long, winding road that came full circle at Cal this month — then broke off again yesterday.

Thompson, who verbally committed to Cal in March, backed off his commitment, and began looking at Washington, Oregon, Notre Dame and USC. When Cal quarterback Zach Maynard struggled midseason, the five-star recruit expressed more doubts about the Bears.

After he finally committed, defensive line coach and top recruiter Tosh Lupoi left, putting his plans in doubt again.

As the top-ranked safety at both Rivals.com and Scout.com, Thompson is arguably the most gifted athlete in this year’s class. Thompson naturally draws comparisons to his brother and former Cal cornerback Syd’Quan, who now plays for the Denver Broncos — with the comparison being that Shaq is bigger and better.

If Cal fans are lucky, they’ll see Thompson will hold to his verbal commitment and make a memorable impact.

Zach Kline
Danville, Calif. (San Ramon Valley)

Since becoming Cal’s first commitment, Zach Kline has been one of the most vocal recruiters for the Bears. Meanwhile, the 6-foot-2 quaterback has steadily risen up recruiting boards with an impressive senior season.

Simply put, Kline is the most hyped quarterback to come to Cal since Kyle Boller in 1999. The excitement has continued to grow after a sterling week of practice leading up to the Under Armour All-American Bowl. All week, the four-star recruit showed off his impressive arm strength, which might be the best in the country. He has a quick, clean release and excels at throwing deep.

Kline does have a tendency to put too much on short throws and has struggled with his touch. He’ll also need to work on his pocket presence before he’s ready to lead — he was sacked five times while sharing playing time at the Bowl.

An early enrollee, Kline will participate in spring practice for the Bears and will have plenty of time to work out those kinks before the 2012 season.

Jordan Payton
Westlake Village, Calif. (Oaks Christian)

Announcing his commitment to come to Cal at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, Jordan Payton became the Bears’ sixth wide receiver in the class of 2012. Payton originally committed to USC but began to explore other options after the Trojans lost their NCAA appeal and had scholarships restricted.

Ranked as the 120th overall prospect by Rivals.com and the 20th receiver, the four-star recruit could see significant minutes as a true freshman, especially given the lack of depth at receiver for the Bears.

At 6-foot-2, Payton is a big target who excels at making catches in traffic, using his hands to make catches away from his body and up and away from smaller defenders. He may not have blazing speed, but he’s a smart, fundamental route-runner who plays to his strengths.

With great hands, a solid ability to adjust to the ball and a sturdy build, Payton is a prime candidate to play in the slot and could be an immediate force over the middle.

As long as recruiter Tosh Lupoi’s absence doesn’t have him looking elsewhere.

Bryce Treggs
Bellflower, Calif. (St. John Bosco)

Of the six wide receivers coming to Cal next fall, Bryce Treggs was the first one to commit to the program. The son of Brian Treggs, who played at Cal from 1988-91, didn’t hesistate to follow his father’s footsteps back in July.

The No. 11-rated receiver on Rivals.com, Treggs finished his senior season with 1377 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns. The four-star wideout doesn’t have much size at 5-foot-11, but his hands, route-running and speed make him the most well-rounded of the new Cal receiving corps. With experience running the routes alongside incoming quarterback Zach Kline in training camps, Treggs may become the cornerstone of a potent passing attack in the upcoming years.

Freddie Tagaloa
Richmond, Calif. (Salesian)

With the departure of left tackle Mitchell Schwartz, the already-shaky Cal offensive line looked even thinner this off-season.

Enter Freddie Tagaloa. In size, the four-star Tagaloa is man among boys, his 6-foot-8, 300-plus pound body helping form an intimidating wall in the offensive line.

But his blend of strength and technicality is the thing that separates Tagaloa from the other offensive linemen, showing the footwork he has learned from his time on the Salesian High basketball team.

A top-30 recruit in California, Tagaloa is a prototypical left tackle. Cal didn’t just find a someone to fill Schwartz’s big boots; they made have found one even bigger and better.

Darius Powe
Lakewood, Calif. (Lakewood)

With the attention of new wide receivers going to more flashy players like Bryce Treggs, Cedric Dozier and Jordan Payton, Darius Powe has been in some ways the forgotten man in this incredibly deep class.

But Powe is anything but silent on the field — Powe is a physical receiver that utilizes his 6-foot-2 frame to the full extent. After showing glimpses of potential at the Under Armour All-American Bowl, Powe in time can be a talent that makes all the noise down the field.

After Tosh Lupoi left for Washington on Monday, Powe was one four-star recruit who reaffirmed his commitment to Cal. He, with Treggs, makes up part of the Bears’ most recent SoCal haul.

— Seung Y. Lee

Cedric Dozier
Lakewood, Wash. (Lakes)

Playing as a dual-threat quarterback at Lakes High School, Cedric Dozier has been recruited as a running back, wide receiver and a corner back, and has the speed and athleticism to excel at all three positions.

Listed as an “athlete,” what position Dozier will end up playing wasn’t a clear consensus. So Cal stole the four-star recruit out of Washington’s backyard by courting him as a wide receiver — his position of choice — and he could make an immediate impact for the Bears. While some still believe Dozier’s size and quickness would be best served on defense, his explosiveness and playmaking ability should have him competing for playing time as a freshman.

Michael Barton
Concord, Calif. (De La Salle)

What do you get when you combine a Bear and a Spartan?

A Barton — specifically Michael Barton. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound outside linebacker out of De La Salle is considered a four-star recruit by Rivals.com, and the No. 39 prospect in California.

Barton is a quick and lengthy linebacker whose size projects him well as an outside linebacker at the next level.

He’ll definitely need to add some bulk to his wiry frame, but his combination of speed and upper body strength makes him a major run-stopper. Another player who reaffirmed his verbal after Lupoi’s departure, Barton could see significant playing time early in his career.
