For the last two years, the All-American singles title has belonged to former Cal standout Susie Babos.
If the Bears want to hold onto that title, they'll need a much better showing in the main draw than they had in the first round of Tuesday's Qualifier.
Senior Bojana Bobusic was defeated and eliminated by Maya Johansson of UCLA in the opening round, falling in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
In the doubles draw, No. 22 senior Claire Ilcinkas and No. 7 sophomore Marina Cossou fell to the No. 20 tandem of Ragini Achraya and Katrina Zoricic from William and Mary's by the score of 8-5.
"It was a close match, but if the losses have to come, I'd rather see this kind of stuff early in the season than later," Cal coach Amanda Augustus said. "There really is not a bad loss here at the All-American, though, because everybody is ranked or has held really good records."
The Bears will still be represented in the singles main draw because Ilcinkas and Cossou have qualified automatically from their performances last year in All-Americans.
"It is good to have the girls down here and playing in this environment to get acquainted with the surfaces and the competition," Augustus said. "I'm looking forward to what Claire and Marina can do in the main draw."
The All-American main draw competition begins on Thursday, Oct. 2 and continues through Sunday, Oct. 5.
