After a hard-fought final match in the 2008 Wilson/ITA Northwest Regional Championship, Cal women's tennis senior Bojana Bobusic fell in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, to Fresno State's third-seeded Melanie Gloria.
Though making it to the finals automatically earned Bobusic a spot in the 2008 ITA National Indoor Championships in November, she nonetheless was agitated by the results of yesterday's final match at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif.
"It was pretty disappointing to lose today's match," Bobusic said. "I have played Melanie twice before and have beaten her on both occasions, so it would have been nice to have been able to come out and win."
Still, Bobusic was proud of what she was able to accomplish over the course of the four-day tournament. One of her victories was over Stanford's top-seeded player-Hilary Barte-in the semifinals on Sunday.
"I wasn't really thinking about the outcome too much when I was playing (Barte)," Bobusic said. "When I beat her I felt really good and it was a great boost of confidence."
After defeating the top-seeded participant in the tournament, Bobusic's accomplishments did not go unnoticed.
"I am happy that Bojana had a great breakthrough and was able to represent the team well," Cal coach Amanda Augustus said. "She had a great performance this week."
In addition to Bobusic, sophomore Marina Cossou, senior Claire Ilcinkas, and freshman Jana Juricova all had successful runs up until the quarterfinals.
"As a team, overall, we did a pretty good job," Augustus said. "We were definitely one of the strongest performing teams there, and we were pretty close to having four players in the semifinals. Everyone represented Cal well and learned a lot from this tournament."
Bobusic, Cossou, Ilcinkas and Juricova displayed great improvement in singles play since the Cal Invitational three weeks ago.
"This Stanford tournament was a tougher test," Augustus said. "They had to play back-to-back matches on multiple days, and many matches in a day. We have been working a lot of our transition game and that is coming along."
Still, while Bobusic stood out in singles play, the Cal doubles teams did not make it quite as far as expected as a result of Fresno State's tough duos.
Cossou and Ilcinkas fell to the top-seeded team of the Bulldogs' Renata Kucerkova and Anastasia Petukhova, while the second-seeded duo of Gloria and Tinesta Rowe took out Cal's Juricova and Marion Ravelojaona on Monday.
"In doubles we tried out some new teams," Augustus said. "They are communicating well and getting to know how to play with one another, but I noticed that we have a lot more work to do on the doubles court to beat the top teams.
"We will just use this experience to keep moving forward at this point in the season."
