Through five matches, the No. 1 Cal volleyball team has yet to drop a set in the 2011 season.
The Bears (5-0) finished off Friday’s play with a 3-0 (31-29, 25-14, 25-11) sweep over host Virginia (3-2) at the Holiday Inn Jerfferson Cup. Senior Tarah Murrey notched a season high 16 digs along with 12 kills, following a team best 15-kill performance from outside hitter Adrienne Gehan.
The first set proved to be by far the most competitive of the day, as it featured 14 ties. Though both teams were hurt by a plethora of errors, Murrey proved to be the difference for the Bears, posting seven digs and eight kills.
In the team’s morning matchup against Long Island, Cal cruised, earning a 3-0 decision (25-14, 25-20, 25-16). Murrey led the way again for the Bears, tallying 11 kills and 10 digs — a dramatic shift from her sluggish play last weekend.
Setter Elly Barrett was also solid, posting 37 assists and three kills of her own. The junior led the squad to a .407 hitting average for the match, including a .560 average for the first set. The Blackbirds only managed to hit .120 for the match.
Cal will finish up its three-game road trip on Saturday, when it takes on East Carolina at 10 a.m.
