Police respond to Southside apartment burglary Saturday

Officers from the Berkeley Police Department and UCPD responded to an apartment burglary on Southside early Saturday morning.

A little after 1:30 a.m., a resident at 2555 Benvenue Ave. — on the corner of Benvenue and Parker Street — awoke to see someone in their apartment, according to Berkeley police Lt. Andrew Greenwood.

The suspect, who entered through either an unlocked or open window, stole a laptop from the apartment and fled, according to Greenwood. The officers conducted an area check at that time but were unable to find the suspect.

The suspect was described as a white man in his 20s with dark hair, between 5 feet 8 inches and 6 feet tall and wearing a plaid shirt, according to Greenwood.

No arrests have been made in connection with the burglary, and the laptop is still missing, Greenwood said.

The two departments were patrolling together as part of the Joint Southside Safety Patrol, a program launched last year in which BPD and UCPD officers patrol the streets together in neighborhoods directly south of campus every Thursday through Saturday during the school year between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.
