This is the text of Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Harry Le Grande’s address to the Occupy Cal general assembly.

“First of all, I want to say that the Occupation of Wall Street is an important point. I think we’re all fighting for the same cause. We appreciate your concerns about the economy and equality in our country. We understand you seek places to discuss and strategize about the issues. You may gather 24/7 over next week on Upper Sproul. Our policy, though, allows no encampment which means no tents, no sleeping bags, no fires or cooking and no sleeping. Amplified sound is allowable from noon to 1 p.m. and from 5 to 7 p.m. — other hours can be arranged by exception. If there are encampments they will be removed. We hope you will work with one another and us to maintain these guidelines. If inclement weather arrives we will allow tarps to be placed for your protection. We will give 10 minutes warning before the police move in so that each student who does not want to get arrested, if that is what is going to occur, can move out.”
