Spare the Air day declared for Sunday

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District has declared Sunday a Spare the Air day, meaning it will be illegal for Bay Area residents to burn wood indoors or outdoors.

The alerts are issued when the concentration of particulate matter in the air could violate state and national health standards, according to the Spare the Air website.

The Spare the Air program was established by the air district in 1991 to encourage behaviors that cut down on pollution.
