A man is in custody for allegedly attempting to rob a UC Berkeley student Thursday evening, according to police.

At around 8:30 p.m., the 23-year-old male student was standing at the intersection of Telegraph and Durant avenues when the suspect grabbed him from behind, according to a UCPD crime alert released Monday.

The suspect allegedly began to check the victim’s pockets, but the victim pushed the suspect away from him, the alert reads. According to the alert, the suspect  tried a second time to grab the victim and “frisk” his pockets, but the victim managed to get away and call UCPD.

UCPD searched the surrounding area and found an individual matching the victim’s description, according to the alert.

The suspect in custody is Andrew Eugene and was positively identified by the victim, according to the alert.
