After four years as director of the Cal Student Store, Jeff Deutsch will leave for a similar position at Stanford University at the end of March.

Deutsch, who has been working at the student store for a total of more than five years, said he made the decision late last week.

“It was a really good opportunity, and I am really proud of the work that happened when I was here,” Deutsch said, adding that he was not sought out by Stanford but applied for the position on his own accord.

Although his new position will also be student store director, Deutsch said Stanford’s five store locations will provide a professional challenge.

Amanda Reese, the assistant Cal Student Store director who was hired in November, described Deutsch as “by far the best person I’ve ever worked for.”

“I will continue to learn from him,” she said. “He’s done some exciting things here.”

Deutsch recalled several major achievements during his time at the campus, such as a “really strong” partnership with the ASUC as well as working on the issues of textbook affordability, rental books and sustainability.

“I expect to go to Stanford with that same spirit of service,” Deutsch said.

According to Deutsch, the hiring of a new store director will be handled by Follett regional manager Pam Wick, along with input from ASUC President Vishalli Loomba and Graduate Assembly President Bahar Navab.

Despite his relocation to UC Berkeley’s longtime rival university, Deutsch said he will look back fondly at his time on campus.

“It was a hard decision for me,” Deutsch said. “It’s the best job I’ve ever had. It’s a total privilege and honor to have been here.”
