OAKLAND — A judge lifted stay-away orders issued against two protesters in connection with the Nov. 9 Occupy Cal protests at a preliminary hearing Friday.

At their arraignments last month, a total of 12 stay-away orders were issued to protesters who were charged in relation to the Nov. 9 demonstrations at UC Berkeley. Four of the orders — which prevent them from stepping onto UC property, except to fulfill class- or work-related duties — were overturned last week, and on Friday, the orders against UC Berkeley students Ramon Quintero and Ricardo Gomez were lifted as well.

Thirteen Occupy Cal protesters have been criminally charged in regards to the Nov. 9 protests at UC Berkeley, including UC Berkeley associate English professor Celeste Langan, whose preliminary hearing set for Thursday was postponed until next month. Quintero and Gomez have been charged on counts that include resisting arrest, remaining at the scene of a riot and obstructing a public place.

All protesters have pleaded not guilty.

At the preliminary hearing — held at the Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse in Oakland — Gomez and Quintero requested a time waiver for their trial date, postponing the trial until April 25.

Jaye Ryan, an attorney for Gomez, said the reason for postponing is so that Paul Hora, assistant district attorney at the Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse, can go over the case with all the people charged so as to come to a “global resolution” for the matter.

The use of force by police on Nov. 9 was widely condemned, and a review of police procedure that day has been launched at the campus and university level. The criminal charges and the stay-away orders themselves have also faced criticism.
