Gunshots at Ed Roberts Campus prompt police investigation

The Berkeley Police Department investigated a gunshot reported on the Ed Roberts Campus in South Berkeley Thursday afternoon.

At approximately 12:41 p.m., the department received several reports from employees of the school — which is located near the Ashby BART station — that a gunshot was heard coming from inside a bathroom at the center, said Berkeley Police Department spokesperson Officer Jennifer Coats in an email. Officers determined the bathrooms were clear but located evidence that a shooting had occurred inside.

Teams of officers conducted a search of the facilities to ensure the safety of those inside and to check for a possible victim or suspect, Coats said the email. A victim has not been located, although local hospitals have been notified.

“The BPD Crime Scene Unit was called to process the scene and officers are actively speaking with potential witnesses to the incident,” Coats said in the email.
