A woman was found dead after suffering a gunshot wound on Derby Street Tuesday evening.
Berkeley Police Department officers responded to an initial report of an injury collision around 11:36 p.m. on the 1500 block of Derby Street, according to a statement from BPD. However, other news sites, including Berkeleyside and ABC-7, have reported that witnesses say the shooting occurred on Sacramento Street between Derby and Ward streets, not on Derby.
A memorial was later set up on Sacramento Street by the victim’s family.
The victim, a 50-year-old woman, was identified by her sister, Cathy White, as Pam Mullins, a resident of the neighborhood.
Berkeley Fire Department arrived at the scene and attended to the victim, who appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound. She was pronounced deceased at the scene by BFD.
“My sister was a good-hearted person,” said White. “She meant the world to us.”
Erick Baclar lives, who less than a block away from where the incident occurred, said the incident is out of the ordinary for the community.
“This is not something we’re accustomed to,” he said.
BPD homicide detectives are currently investigating the incident.
