When we start to get depressed after paying our CARS bill, it’s nice to remember that, around the world, rankings are coming out that say Cal rocks. The Clog has compiled a list of our favorite rankings released in 2013 that recognize how great our school and city are. Read below to see where Cal stands on the charts of everything from renowned graduate school programs to notoriously hippie cities.

#9: Top law school

UC Berkeley School of Law was ranked ninth by U.S. News based on a weighted average of assessments made by peers, lawyers and judges, as well as selectivity and more.

#8: Hippie environment

In a recent report released by Estately.com, Berkeley was ranked as the eighth-best city for hippies to live in. The ranking was based off a myriad factors, including availability of marijuana and tie-dye, number of stores selling hemp and intensity of Occupy protests.

#7: Worldwide recognition

The Saudi Arabia-based Center for World University Rankings placed UC Berkeley seventh using a quantitative approach that considered the quality of education, research and alumni.

#6: Philanthropic efforts

UC Berkeley ranked sixth among universities for producing Peace Corps volunteers. In February of this year, there were 85 Cal alumni volunteering abroad with the Peace Corps, and more than 3,500 Golden Bears have volunteered with the organization since its founding in 1961.

#5: We rock more than Stanford

Washington Monthly kept Cal in fifth place in its annual ranking based on recruiting and graduating low-income students, producing cutting-edge scholarship and promoting a culture of service. FYI, Stanford placed sixth.

#4: Social media

UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business was No. 4 in a ranking of most social-media-friendly MBA schools. Online MBA Page.com looked at the social media accounts — including YouTube, Pinterest and Twitter accounts — of MBA schools to see how successful they are at maximizing their online presence.

#3: International acclaim

Shanghai Rankings, using research done by the Center for World-Class Universities of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, pegged us the third-best university in the world.

#2: Best subjects

In the QS World University Rankings by Subject, UC Berkeley ranked No. 2  — tying with the University of Oxford for the second-highest number of appearances on the top-10 list. UC Berkeley was also listed as No. 1 in the subjects communication and media studies, environmental sciences, sociology and statistics.

#1: Berkeley wins

U.S. News and World Report ranked UC Berkeley the No. 1 public school in the country!

Corrections: A previous version of this article incorrectly stated that in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, UC Berkeley was ranked No. 2 in communication and media studies, environmental sciences, sociology and statistics. In fact, the campus was ranked first in those areas. UC Berkeley and Oxford University had the second-highest number of appearances on the top-10 list.
