A man was robbed of his cellphone Wednesday morning at the intersection of Bancroft Way and Telegraph Avenue.

About 9:10 a.m., the victim was walking while talking on his cellphone when another man walked past him and tried to take his phone and grab items from his pockets, according to a UCPD crime alert released Thursday.

The victim, who was uninjured during the encounter, fled to UCPD at Sproul Hall, and a UCPD officer detained an individual who matched the suspect’s description a few blocks away.

According to the UCPD crime alert, police arrested Lavar Demark Brown in connection with the incident.

Brown is currently being held at the Berkeley Jail with bail set at $100,000, according to the Alameda County Inmate Locator. His arraignment is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse in Oakland.
