A man was the victim of an attempted car robbery and assault with a deadly weapon Monday morning on Bancroft Way near Dana Street.

About 6 a.m., the victim, a 27-year-old man not affiliated with the UC Berkeley campus, had just parked his car when the perpetrator approached him and demanded his car keys, according to a UCPD crime alert released Wednesday. The perpetrator then jabbed a knife toward the victim, who defended himself and struggled against the perpetrator.

The victim then broke free and went to his workplace, where he called the police. Responding UCPD officers detained the man in front of Wells Fargo Bank on Telegraph Avenue. Berkeley Police Department officers took the suspect, Damian Patterson, into custody and booked him into the Berkeley Jail, with bail set at $105,000. Patterson’s arraignment was scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Alameda County Inmate Locator website.
