Fourteen auto burglaries have occurred in parking lots around campus thus far in July.

According to a UCPD crime alert released Tuesday, the burglaries occurred in the Lower Hearst and Ellsworth parking structures, Coffer Dam, the Foothill and Witter Field lots, the LHS Terrace lot, the RSF garage and the Clark Kerr campus. Most were committed by window smash.

Purses, laptops and cell phones are among the items taken. Police recommend putting valuable items out of sight either inconspicuously or before reaching one’s destination, keeping a copy of one’s registration and insurance to give to police if necessary, and avoiding parking next to occupied vehicles.

In a June 23 crime alert UCPD noted an increase in auto burglaries near campus, with 15 reported since the beginning of the month. According to a May alert, 20 auto burglaries were reported to UCPD in April.
