A woman not affiliated with the campus was sexually assaulted early Monday morning in People’s Park.

The woman woke up to a man sexually assaulting her, according to a UCPD crime alert released Tuesday. She screamed at the man, who left the area. The woman told police that the man frequents the park.

The incident is an ongoing investigation. UCPD Lt. Marc DeCoulode said authorities could not release additional details of the sexual assault because the information could compromise the investigation. Berkeley Police Department first responded to the incident, but UCPD officers took over the investigation about 11 a.m. because the park is campus property.

According to the crime alert, the suspect is described as a black male in his 50s, 5-foot-7 in height, 160 pounds, with a slender build and wearing a gray sweatshirt with a red devil on it.
