An AC Transit bus collided with and sheared off the top of a fire hydrant Wednesday afternoon near the Downtown Berkeley BART station, flooding the streets with water.

The fire hydrant, located at the northeast corner of Shattuck Avenue and Center Street, broke at approximately 4:05 p.m. The back right corner of the bus was damaged.

According to Berkeley Police Department Sgt. Mary Kusmiss, the Alameda County Fire Department was able to stop the flow of water at approximately 4:20 p.m.

Kusmiss said the biggest difficulty with the incident was managing traffic when water was flooding onto the street but that the incident did not pose a public safety issue.

There were no injuries reported from the incident, according to Kusmiss.

The case was turned over to the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office because an AC Transit bus was involved.
