UC Berkeley student sexually battered in front of Free Speech Movement Cafe

A 20-year-old female UC Berkeley student was sexually battered in front of the Free Speech Movement Cafe on Thursday afternoon.

The student was approached while eating lunch about 12:45 p.m. by a man asking for food, according to a UCPD crime alert released Thursday. After receiving food from the student, the man sat next to her and asked her for money. The student told the man she had to leave. It was then that the man asked for a hug and, after the student complied, allegedly touched her inappropriately. The suspect was last seen walking west toward the Valley Life Sciences Building, police said.

The student did not sustain any injuries during the incident.

UCPD searched the area about an hour later but did not locate the suspect.

According to the crime alert, the suspect is described as a 30-year-old black male with a medium build, a dark complexion and a Van Dyke-style beard and wearing a zipped-up black coat, an ID-type badge around his neck and blue denim jeans.
