All Berkeley Unified School District schools and administrative offices will close Thursday in anticipation of severe weather, including possible flash floods and high winds.

According to district spokesperson Mark Coplan, the school district was concerned about teachers’ ability to commute to school amid the storm, resulting in a lack of student supervision. He said administrators were also worried about the possibility of power outages.

“In order to ensure student safety, we’re erring on the side of caution,” Coplan said.

Though he said schools are expected to reopen Friday, managerial staff will inspect campuses if the storms continue and determine whether to close the school for an additional day. The National Weather Service has issued warnings for flash floods and high winds from 10 p.m. Wednesday to 10 p.m. the following night.
