Berkeley Police Department closed off Oxford Street between Center and Kittredge streets Tuesday afternoon to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic in order to investigate a “suspicious package.”

The package was delivered through regular mail services and was found on the 2100 block of Allston Way, according to BPD Lt. Andrew Rateaver. It was first reported about noon, and police opened the roads about 1:25 p.m.

BPD spokesperson Officer Jennifer Coats called closing off traffic a “precaution” and said BPD worked with Berkeley Fire Department to thoroughly check the area.

According to a news release, the package is suspected to contain narcotics and will be investigated further to determine if the contents are a hazard to the community.
