Daily Cal Arts’ picks for Oscars best-dressed

This year, the Oscars faced controversy, and the telecasted show featured everything from a creepy John Travolta to Lady Gaga slaying her “Sound of Music” homage. Yet the Oscars wouldn’t be the Oscars without everybody’s favorite hot topic: the fashion. So here it is — the best dressed list. We’ve decided to forgo a worst-dressed list, because at The Daily Californian, we’re just not down with that.

Emma Stone — wearing Elie Saab.

Looking like an Oscar statue herself — or a cool glass of lemonade — Emma Stone reinvented a classic look in a striking gold. Paired with her red hair — which is arguably her best accessory — the look was a combination that screams “the Oscars.” She may not have taken home a gilded trophy, but she definitely takes home the title of best dressed.

Rosamund Pike — wearing Givenchy haute couture.

While red was attempted by a few actresses Sunday night, Rosamund Pike outdid the rest by far. Dressed in intricate red lace and satin, Pike looked stunning. She put the actual red carpet to shame, making it look dull in comparison. The look just has that allure that draws you in, much like her Oscar-nominated character, Amy from “Gone Girl.”

Lupita Nyong’o — wearing custom Calvin Klein Collection.

On Sunday night, Lupita Nyong’o proved that pearls — not diamonds — are a girl’s best friend. Emerging like a sea goddess drenched in thousands of the little white gems, Nyong’o looked glamorous in a simple yet intricately detailed statement gown. While the dress seemed as if it were heavy, she pulled it off with her usual grace and elegance.

Reese Witherspoon — wearing custom Tom Ford — but she wants you to #askhermore

Simple is chic, and Reese gets that. She champions the classic style on whatever red carpet she walks, while always looking confident and put together. The white gown fit her petite body like a glove, and the minimal make up and delicate earrings softened the sleek silhouette of Ford’s modern masterpiece.  But, most importantly, Reese gets a nod on this list for spearheading the #askhermore campaign. You go, Reese.

Also, the hair is very “Legally Blonde” circa 2002, amiright?

Dakota Johnson — wearing Saint Laurent.

It looks like somebody’s fashion choices were inspired by her smoldering new movie. Dakota Johnson definitely brought the sex appeal up a level with her hot-chile-red, one-shoulder dress Sunday night. Her shoulder strap was held up with an encrusted diamond piece, helping bring the attention to her face with the on-point lightened smoky eye. Johnson really shines through the sexy simplicity of the dress.

Keira Knightley — wearing Valentino.

Even while pregnant, Keira Knightley looks like an ethereal beauty gracing us with her presence. While her Golden Globes dress had butterflies, this ensemble had embroidered flowers on tulle and featured script. Knightley just flowed throughout the night in this dress. She has been the most unique person to watch this awards season, and she is even wearing a thin floral headband hidden among her wavy locks. But her best accessory isn’t fashion at all: It’s her baby bump!
