About 23 Berkeley police officers responded to fights that drew crowds of about 400 to 500 people on the east side of Berkeley High School on Friday afternoon.

BHS students, nonstudents from San Leandro and Oakland, and adults were involved in the 15 to 20 fights that took place from about 3:40 to 4:20 p.m., according to an email to the BHS community from principal Kristin Glenchur. Three BHS students and two Berkeley Technology Academy students were arrested. Students will also face discipline by the school.

After hearing reports of fighting on Shattuck Avenue during lunch, the BHS administration contacted Berkeley Police Department. Police increased their presence in the surrounding area in preparation for school’s dismissal, according to the email. Administrators were especially careful not to allow nonstudents onto campus, partly in light of the fact that neighboring school districts are currently on spring break.
