Berkeley Police Department searched for a suspect involved in a fatal shooting Tuesday evening near the intersection of Russell and California streets.
Police received multiple 911 calls about 8:30 p.m. about gunshots near the intersection, according to BPD spokesperson Officer Jennifer Coats.
When officers arrived on the scene, they located a male victim who was then transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Coats said.
The victim was identified as Christian Sheppard, a 24 year old male from Stockton.
BPD closed off the 1600 blocks of Russell Street and Julia Street and encouraged residents to remain inside and report any suspicious activity by calling 911.
Officers investigated the scene as well as searched for the suspect nearby but did not have a description of the suspect.
BPD’s Special Response Team arrested a suspect, Anthony Durant, a 24 year old male from Berkeley, early Wednesday morning on the 1600 block of Julia Street.
BPD believes that the suspect and the victim were acquainted, and are continuing to investigate the shooting.
As of Wednesday at 12:55 a.m. BPD had reopened the blocks of Russell Street and Julia Street.
