Berkeley Fire Department responds to Ellis Street house fire Tuesday

Berkeley Fire Department responded to a fire at 2917 Ellis St. in South Berkeley at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Two of the four adult residents in the two-story, single-family home present at the time of the fire were sent to the hospital for possible smoke inhalation, according to BFD Capt. Brian Evans, who worked as a battalion chief Tuesday.

Evans said that there was significant damage to the main living quarters of the residence and that the cause of the fire is unknown. Evans added that he did not know when the residents would return to their home but that American Red Cross had contacted them to help them find temporary housing.

Firefighters remained at the scene until 2:30 p.m., overhauling the home by opening up walls and ceilings to check for potentially hidden remnants of the fire.

BFD is currently conducting a preliminary investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
