Campus administration has announced that professor Robert Reich of UC Berkeley’s Goldman School of Public Policy will be the December commencement speaker.
Reich served as secretary of labor under president Bill Clinton and previously taught at Harvard University. He is a senior fellow at the campus’s Blum Center for Developing Economies and teaches a popular course in the school of public policy titled “Wealth and Poverty.”
The past two semesters’ commencement speakers, Salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff and comedian Bill Maher, received mixed responses from the student body.
Maher’s selection was met with widespread protest from students because of remarks he had made regarding Islam. ASUC External Affairs Vice President Marium Navid, then a senator, authored a petition calling for a student boycott of the commencement and asked the campus to rescind its invitation to Maher.
The commencement ceremony will take place Dec. 20 at the Haas Pavilion. Registration will open Monday and last until Nov. 23.
