Update 1/19/16: This story has been updated to reflect new information from UCPD.

On Saturday, San Leandro police recovered a 300-pound statue of a former Cal crew coach that was stolen Jan. 13 from UC Berkeley’s boathouse in Oakland, according to a UCPD crime alert.

After San Leandro Police Department officers investigated a parked pick-up truck with expired registration, they found the stolen statue partially disassembled inside the vehicle.

The life-size bronze statue depicts Carroll “Ky” Ebright — who coached the Bears from 1924-59 and led the team to three gold-medal Olympic victories — and is valued at approximately $80,000.

The UCPD crime alert describes the suspect as Dean Gamaza, a 46-year-old white male.
